OUR WINES / OUR PORTFOLIO

GUNTRUM RIESLING / DRY RIESLING

World-famous and recognized in more than 50 countries around the World as harmonious, fruity Riesling with low alcohol content. DRY RIESLING is the racy, dry counterpart.

GUNTRUM – A Family Affair

DOWN-TO-EARTH AND HONEST

Since 1648 the GUNTRUM family has produced exceptional wines. In 1909 Louis Guntrum returned to the left bank of the Rhein River and settled in Nierstein, Rheinhessen. Today, Konstantin Guntrum and his wife Stephanie continue the family heritage as 11th generation. Their commitment to the family heritage: “Tradition is not about tending the ash, but about stoking the fire.”

RIVER RHEIN IS OUR LIFELINE

RHEINHESSEN IS OUR ANCESTRY

We are – literally – rooted in Rheinhessen. The world-famous Nierstein „Roter Hang“, the Oppenheim hillside vineyards, the rolling hills of Rheinhessen are individual terroirs, which allow to produce unique wines from each terroir. Red sandstone (Nierstein), chalk (Oppenheim) or clay – nature provides us with the perfect soil for different grape varieties. The mediterranean climate combines all these elements to perfection.

Unique wines are widely affected by individual terroirs. Rheinhessen offers many of these individual terroirs: World-famous red sandstone in Nierstein. Chalk soil in Oppenheim. Clay for the rolling hills of Rheinhessen. For us, sustainability is a mindset, which we have been cultivating for generations: “Just like you are working sustainable and never noticed it!“. Our slogan in the cellar is even simpler: Sweet idleness. Time and patience are amongst the best winemakers of the World.

OUR LOCATIONS IN NIERSTEIN

Around 2 hectares of vineyards.
Southeast slope.
Magnificent Riesling vines thrive on loess and sandy loam. Absolute top location. Named after the St. Kilian mountain church above Nierstein.

Niersteiner Bergkirche

Around 60 hectars of vinyards
50% steep, 35% steep, 15% flat.
Pure south exposure.
The soil is clay, ideal for Riesling. Top location for great wines. Name with biblical origin, like many in this room, named after an earlier monastery.

Niersteiner Oelberg

Around 32 hectares of vineyards.
85% steeply sloping towards the Rhine. 10% pending, 5% flat.
East to southeast exposure.
Slate clay and red sandstone, so-called “red lying”. Keeps the heat of the day through the night. Ideally suited for Riesling vines. Ideal climatic conditions. The name goes back to “Pater’s Tal”, the valley of the Pater’s.

Niersteiner Pettenthal

Small, attractive large location consisting of NIERSTEINER PETTENTHAL, NIERSTEINER HIPPING and NIERSTEINER BRUDERSBERG.
Around 65 hectares of vineyards sloping down towards the Rhine,
East to south-east exposure.
Slate, red sandstone and clayey loam “Rotliegende” determine this location. Best vineyard soil. Ideal climatic conditions also due to the close proximity to the Rhine. Ideally suited for the Riesling grape. The origin of the name is controversial, probably “red brook”, from rivulets colored by the “red lying” after heavy rainfall down the slope.

Niersteiner Rehbach

Around 147 hectares of vineyards at the height between Nierstein and Oppenheim located in a gently curved formation with an open slope to the west.
Loess, clay loam and marl determine the rich, productive soil. Origin of name from Pater (monk), from the earlier monastery. In this location we successfully grow Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Silvaner for our liter bottle as well as for our penguin ice wine.

Niersteiner Paterberg

Around 18 hectares of vineyards.
60% steep, 30% inclined, 10% flat.
Soil is clayey loam, so-called “Rotliegend”. Ideal vineyard soil, especially for Riesling. The red sandstone floor keeps the heat of the day through the night. Dry damage is also possible in very hot years.

Nierstein Orbel

OUR LOCATIONS IN OPPENHEIM

Around 22 hectares of vineyards, 100% pending in the shape of a horseshoe.
Direct, well-protected southern exposure. Sandy clay. One of the best locations in Rheinhessen. Ideal climatic conditions through hills protected to the north and west. Excellent for globally successful Riesling wines. Top location for great wines. The name comes from the medieval guild of bag carriers who carried shiploads from the Rhine to the city.

Oppenheimer Sackträger

Around 5 hectares of vineyards,
slight slope east to southwest.
Soil: clay, limestone. The name comes from a votive cross made of red sandstone on the edge of this location.

Oppenheimer Kreuz

Around 29 hectares of vineyards,
East to southeast slope.
Soil: clay, loess, limestone, sandy to stony and clayey loam. This vineyard was owned by ecclesiastical and secular lords.
