Louis Guntrum tasting by Steven Spurrier / Decanter, London, Great Britain,

October 2nd, 2008

DRY RIESLING 2007.

Fresh, pale colour, good white flowers and limey Riesling nose, quite a bit of fruit;  quite broad flavours, but still fresh and nice acidity on the finish;  good clear expression and good regional wine.  15.5.

DRY RIESLING 2006.

Fine pale lemony yellow, floral, slightly spicy and hints of dry honey on the nose;  richer and smoother fruit than 2007, but less lifted personality but nice clean fruit and good regional expression.  15.

NIERSTEINER PETTENTHAL RIESLING KABINETT TROCKEN 2007.

Bright, pale lemony yellow, white flowers, lifted even slightly smoky nose, citrussy aromas dominant;  dryness comes as a surprise after the ripe fruit of the nose, but a pleasant surprise, good minerally finish, clear and crisp;  not much complexity, but good personality.  16.

NIERSTEINER ORBEL RIESLING SPATLESE TROCKEN 2007.

Very pale lemony yellow, white flowers, acacia, citrussy nose, more lemon than lime, already showing complexity;  more pronounced fruit than the Pettenthal and the dry finish is in better balance, ripeness and charming fruit on the palate, nice minerally finish, quite long, good future.  16.5.

OPPENHEIMER SACKTRAGER RIESLING SPATLESE TROCKEN 2007.

Lemony yellow, pale, but more weight than the Orbel, floral and more fruity nose, a hint of fresh pears and seems riper, certainly more complex;  nice limey edge to the palate, dryness is totally in balance, lovely fruit/florality, will be very good over the next few years.  17.

NIERSTEINER BERGKIRCHE RIESLING KABINETT 2007.

Silvery pale, a nice ripeness, even a hint of exotic fruit above the floral-limey Riesling nose;  good depth of fruit on the palate and seems weightier than its 10 degrees alcohol and certainly sweeter than I expected from a Kabinett.;  floral, soft fruit finish with lifted acidity, a good wine, still a little young and obvious, will show more complexity next year.  16.

NIERSTEINER REHBACH RIESLING SPATLESE 2007.

Bright lemony yellow, vivacious and fresh, quite broad citrus fruits over quite ripe florality;  dry honey, honey and flowers, summer ripe fruits on the palate, good broad length, good fruit, a little four-square, but florality dominates and it will be more expressive next year.  16.5.

OPPENHEIMER HERRENBERG RIESLING AUSLESE 2007.

Fresh silver pale (expected a fuller colour due to extra sweetness), white flowers and dry honey dominate of fresh summer white fruits on the nose;  very good broad fruit on the palate, lovely lifting acidity, which balances the concentrated richness, which in itself is elegant and lifted;  a very good wine, beautiful vineyard characteristics.  18.

OPPENHEIMER HERRENBERG RIESLING AUSLESE 2006.

Quite full lemony yellow, rich on the sides of the glass, pronounced dry white fruits and honey on the nose,  overall rich and ripe florality;  broad, even sensuous fruit on the palate, very good ripeness yet all in balance.  Less finesse than 2007 but more structure,  a very good wine, but the 2007 is finer.  17.5.

My overall impression is that these wines are of uniform high quality, well-made from healthy grapes from well-kept vineyards.  One shouldn’t have to ask for much more.  This was a pleasurable tasting and, since the remainder of the bottles will go down the sink after an aperitif this evening, I kept the Gewurztraminer Beerenauslese to open at a time when I know the bottle will be drunk, not just tasted.

With kind regards,

Steven Spurrier
