On October 19th, we have harvested the last grapes of 2007 vintage. Quality and ripeness of the grapes is above average, and especially Riesling was able to take advantage of beautiful weather conditions in October. The ripening season was mixed. High temperatures above 30°C throughout the month of April and no rain led to a lead of four weeks in the development of vines and grapes. Only due to a cool month of August was this lead shortened to a couple of weeks during and just prior to harvest. Harvest started on September 10th, almost three weeks ahead of the longterm average and extended more than five weeks, due to uneven ripening stages of different grape varities. Warm, sunny days early in October lead to excellent ripening conditions and contributed to wonderfully ripe and balanced grapes. Well balanced acidity levels, moderate alcohol grades and impressive varietal character characterize the vintage 2007, which will be most enjoyable to drink young, due to the moderate alcohol levels and high fruit concentration, but which will also last for many years, due to pleasant acidity levels.
Rising demand for Riesling as well as for Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and rapidly rising costs for production support materials, such as glass and energy, may lead to rising prices of our wines. A final decision has not been taken.
